Floating Village & Fishing Tour
As you may know, the majority of residents in the floating villages earn their living by fishing the Tonle Sap. Depending on the time of year, they catch shrimp, small fish, water snails or clams. If you are interested in learning about fishing in the Tonle Sap this is the tour for you!
We will depart from Siem Reap at your preferred time and make our way to Kompong Khleang. On the way we will make stops for fresh sticky rice and donuts and then briefly visit a rural market. During this time you will see some of the commune fish found in the lake. We will then make our way to the village where we work. You will visit a home, learn about our not-for-profit organization, take a brief walking tour.
Afterwards, depending on the time of year, we will meet a local fisherman and learn about how he fishes and earns a living on the Tonle Sap. We will then follow him out into the lake. Typically we can watch the fisherman cast nets or lay shrimp lines in the flooded forest. We will also have a chance to visit his traps so we can see what he caught the previous day. Depending on the guide, we can also visit a fish farm to see how locals are responding to lower stock in the Tonle Sap.
After the fishing experience we continue out to the Tonle Sap to see two other floating villages and then return home. Please note that guests will typically not fish themselves due to safety concerns and the difficulty of fishing in the lake. Fishing is also seasonal – so you can expect to experience different methods of fishing depending on lake levels.
The cost of this tour is $250 USD for up to 4 participants. It is all inclusive including boat tickets. There is a supplement of $25 USD per person after 4 participants. The duration of this tour is approximately 7 hours but is flexible.
Trip Itinerary
An Hour-By-Hour Breakdown Of Private Kompong Khleang Fishing Tour
8:00 AM – Pick Up from Siem Reap
We will pick you up at your hotel or preferred pick-up location in an air-conditioned van.
8:45 AM – Stop for Sticky Rice at Poom Krolanh
We will pull over and taste fresh, Cambodian sticky rice. You will learn how its made and how to properly eat this popular treat.
9:10 AM – Visit a Local Bakery
Here we will visit a local bakery and try their specialty – palm sugar donuts. Depending on the day we will seem the prepare local delights using traditional equipment.
9:45 AM – Arrive in Kompong Khleang
Depending on the time of year, we will either board a community tourism boat or drive directly to Outaput Village in Kompong Khleang to visit Bridge of Life’s site, learn about life on the Tonle Sap, and explore the community.
11:00 AM – Board a Fisherman's Boat
Now we board a fisherman’s boat. They are very small and you will sit on the floor and zoom through the village and out to the lake.
11:30 AM – Shrimping in the Flooded Forest
Depending on water levels we can enter the flooded forest and visit traps set for fresh water shrimp. They use cages and floating plastic bottles to catch the shrimp.
12:15 PM – Visit Fish Traps on the Tonle Sap
Long traps made from wood and net catch small fish on the Tonle Sap. Learn how they work and see what fish they are holding
12:45 PM – Traditional Net Casting
The most common way to catch fish in ponds and when the Tonle Sap shrinks. Watch as experience fisherman cast heavy nets to catch local fish.
1:30 PM – Depart the Tonle Sap
Leave the lake and head back to Outaput Village to reboard the community tourism boat.
2:00 PM – Travel back to Siem Reap
After a long day board the van and head back to Siem Reap. We can stop for lunch at a restaurant on the way back (not included in price).
3:00 PM - Arrive in Siem Reap
